Yesterday afternoon in the Melbourne area, on Hyndeman road between
Melbourne road and Mayfair there were Northern Harrier, Rough-legged Hawk
and Northern Shrike. The shrike was alternately perching and hunting on the
south side of the road, just west of the grape orchard, in a field where
there are a number of thorn bushes.
On the north branch of the Thames near Adelaide Street bridge a great Blue
Heron and a Kingfisher were seen on Tuesday. Someone had a Screech owl
sitting in a blue spruce in his yard. A Great Horned Owl has been seen in
the Kilally area, between Highbury and the river. They used to nest in that
area so perhaps will again.
It has just come to light that a Yellow-rump Warbler visited a feeder on
Christmas Day. It stayed 2 or 3 days, then disappeared. Too bad; it would
have been nice for winter listers.
