OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE - FEB 11 2002 AT 9:00 AM

This is Chris Lewis reporting for the Ottawa Field-Naturalists' Club
Bird Status Line at 9:00 AM on Monday February 11, 2002.

A flock of 14 RED CROSSBILLS, the 1st report of this
species in the Ottawa area since last year, was seen on Feb. 10th
along Clarence-Cambridge Rd. near Indian Creek Rd. northeast of
Limoges  in the area of the Larose Forest.

A TUFTED TITMOUSE continues to visit the feeders in
the mobile home park at 5620 Rockdale Rd. in Vars.  This bird seems
to prefer the feeders in the backyards of  # 13 and  #14.  The
property owners at #14 have requested a call in advance of your
visit...call Henri & Carmen Rolland at (613) 835-3121.

There have been no sightings of the GREAT GRAY OWL on
the Quebec side along Boul. Labrosse since February 5, but the
NORTHERN HAWK OWL on River Rd. between Luskville
and Quyon (also in Quebec) was still present as of the 9th.

A HOARY REDPOLL was seen at the Hilda Rd. feeder near
Shirley's Bay yesterday, and 14 GRAY PARTRIDGES were
seen on February 8th  near buildings # 100 -130 along Colonnade Road
North.  At least a part of this flock was seen on February 10th at
the intersection north of the Fisher Scientific building at the east
end of Colonnade Rd.

Birds that continue to over-winter are: The female Harlequin Duck
on the Rideau River between Strathcona Park and the
Rideau Tennis Club; a male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE on
the Ottawa River at Remic Rapids; several Glaucous and at least one
Iceland Gull on the ice on the Ottawa River at Britannia; Snowy Owls
in many locations including the St-Isodore, Casselman and Navan
areas east of Ottawa as well as west-end locations such as the
fields at Greenbank & Fallowfield Rds., and the farms in the
Eagleson/ Brownlee Rd. area; the Red-bellied Woodpecker at
695 Golden Line Rd. east of Carleton Place; the
Carolina Wrens at both 868 Acadian Gardens in Orleans
and the feeders in Leamy Lake Park in Hull, Quebec; at least six
Lapland Longspurs along Donald B. Munro Rd. west
of Carp; the Hermit Thrush at the Ottawa Duck Club feeders on the
4th Line of Kanata; and the Brown Thrasher at the Hilda Ave.
feeders.

10 Wild Turkeys were seen on February 7th in the area
of Mansfield and Huntley Rd's near Munster Hamlet. Bohemian Waxwings
have been seen recently along Henry Farm Dr.
between Carling & Maitland Ave., and along Range Rd.near Shirley's
Bay.

In news from farther afield: A female SUMMER TANAGER
in Deep River, Ont. is being well looked-after in the backyard at 36
Frontenac St. She has been regular at this address since November,
and was still feeding here on February 9th.
