Hamilton Naturalists' Club Birding Hotline Report - Thursday, August 8th, 2002

At 12:00 noon, Thursday, August 8th, 2002, this is the
Hamilton Naturalists' Club Birding Hotline Report. The
Hotline is normally revised on Thursday, unless an
unusual bird turns up in the Hamilton area. 

Until hawk and songbird migration begins in earnest,
shorebirds continue to be the focus of this weeks
report. Here are a few of the hotspots, along with the
birds seen at them this week:

Rock Point Provincial Park: RUDDY TURNSTONE,
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, BAIRD'S
SANDPIPER, and PECTORAL SANDPIPER.

Tollgate Ponds in Hamilton: BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER,
SEMI-PALMATED PLOVER, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER,
KILLDEER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS,
PECTORAL SANDPIPER, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, LEAST
SANDPIPER, SEMI-PALMATED SANDPIPER, and BAIRD'S
SANDPIPER.

Crescent Beach, Fort Erie: WHIMBREL, GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, KILLDEER, SPOTTED
SANDPIPER, SEMI-PALMATED SANDPIPER. 

"Lake Congestion" (Ponds west of Guelph Line on the
North Service Road in Burlington): SOLITARY SANDPIPER,
SPOTTED SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER, WILSON'S
PHALAROPE, plus GREATER YELLOWLEGS and LESSER
YELLOWLEGS.

Other local reports include an early WHITE-WINGED
SCOTER at Van Wagner's Beach, and a flock of 75
KILLDEER at Haldibrook and Mine Roads just south of
Hamilton.

There was only one yard report this week, but what a
report it was...the following birds were seen in a
Binbrook yard (the list includes nesting species,
resident birds and flybys): EASTERN PHOEBE, PURPLE
MARTIN, TREE SWALLOW, BARN SWALLOW, BANK SWALLOW,
NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW, EASTERN MEADOWLARK,
EASTERN BLUEBIRD, BOBOLINK, GRASSHOPPPER SPARROW,
SAVANNAH SPARROW, HORNED LARK, BRANT, BLUE-WINGED
TEAL, NORTHERN HARRIER, KILLDEER, SPOTTED SANDPIPER,
SOLITARY SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, and LESSER
YELLOWLEGS.
