At 8:30pm, Thursday, August 29th, 2002, this is the
Hamilton Naturalists' Club Birding Hotline Report. The
Hotline is normally revised on Thursday, unless an
unusual bird turns up in the Hamilton area. 

There were lots of great reports this week. Strong
east winds made for good viewing at Van Wagner's Beach
where LONG-TAILED JAEGERS and PARASITIC JAEGERS were
seen on several different occasions. Also seen at Van
Wagner's were RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, COMMON LOON,
SANDERLING, OSPREY, and BONAPARTE'S GULL. 

An AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN turned up Saturday at
Tollgate ponds, and seems to have settled in at
Coote's Paradise. It has been reported at various
locations around Coote's throughout the week. Other
birds seen around the RBG include BROAD-WINGED HAWK,
OSPREY, BALD EAGLE, WOOD DUCK, BLUE-WINGED TEAL,
AMERICAN WIGEON, GREAT BLUE HERON, BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT
HERON, GREAT EGRET, SORA RAIL, LESSER YELLOWLEGS,
SCARLET TANAGER, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, and AMERICAN
REDSTART on the North Shore Trails, and OSPREY,
WILSON'S WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART, ROSE-BREASTED
GROSBEAK, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, LEAST SANDPIPER, and
SEMI-PALMATED PLOVER at Valley Inn.

Other local reports include OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATHCER at
the Turner Tract, COMMON MOORHEN at Mountberg, 21
species of birds at Shoreacres/Paletta Park, and
CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER,
CANADA WARBLER, BLACK & WHITE WARBLER, AMERICAN
REDSTART, OVENBIRD, RED-EYED VIREO, TUFTED TITMOUSE,
BALTIMORE ORIOLE, and RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD at the
North Waterdown Wetland Trails. 

Out of town, the Townsend Sewage Lagoons were good for
shorebirds with BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER, SPOTTED SANDPIPER,
SEMI-PALMATED SANDPIPER, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, PECTORAL
SANDPIPER, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, WILSON'S PHALAROPE,
WHIMBREL, DUNLIN, SEMI-PALMATED PLOVER, and KILLDEER.
