OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE - JUN 02 2003 AT 7:30 PM
This is Chris Lewis reporting.
Three adult summer ARCTIC TERNS were discovered yesterday
afternoon at the base of the Deschenes rapids between the
Britannia Yacht Club and the filtration plant. This morning, 2
were seen again in the same location.
Also present here yesterday & today, among the 1000's of Ring-
billed Gulls, were between 18 and 24 1st-summer Bonaparte's Gulls
hawking for the recently emerged "mayflies" and other insects. A
Black Tern was seen here yesterday but not today, and the immature
Bonaparte's Gulls were joined by an adult bird today.
On May 31 a flock of approx. 120 Brant were observed from the
filtration plant, flying west up the Ottawa River, and 11 male
White-winged Scoters were on Lac Deschenes, seen from Dick Bell
Park & the Shirley's Bay boat launch.
These sightings indicate a dynamic time for birding on the Ottawa
River...stay tuned to the Bird Status Line for more reports later
Thank you - Good Birding
