There were at least 100 Common Mergansers on Canal Lake today, at about 2:30PM. Nearly all were males, in the open water east of the causeway.

There were another 200 white birds further east, just out of binocular range, in another patch of open water. They were probably also mergansers, but they could have been gulls. Canal Lake is about one-half frozen over.

Also within range were a few Buffleheads and a few Scaup, and one or two gulls on the ice.

The Osprey was also on the platform beside the causeway.

Directions: Canal Lake is between Bolsover and Kirkfield, just north of #48. Turn north at the sign to Centennial Park, and proceed past the park to the far end of the causeway.
