Observation start time: 07:00:00
Observation end time: 17:15:00
Total observation time: 10.25 hours

Official Counter: Jeff Schultz

Observers: Alan Ryff, Calvin Brennan

Weather:
Today was another clear blue day with virtually no clouds. Winds were
generally light from the north throughout the day bearing a bit more to
the northeast in the afternoon.

Observations:
The vulture masses were on the move early and continued all day long, not
letting up until the 6 o’clock hour. It was apparent early on that the day
had the potential of being a record breaker and certainly this notion
proved to be true. The 12,131 tallied today shattered the old single day
mark of 8,988 established on12 October a year ago. Particularly impressive
were two hours each in excess of three thousand birds, perhaps single hour
records in their own right. Other highlights of the day included the best
movement of Red-tails and Cooper’s Hawks so far this fall as well the
first Rough-leg tallied for the season, a light morph individual. Also
encouraging was that more than half of the 17 Red-shoulders seen today
were juveniles, perhaps a hopeful trend. As seen in recent seasons at this
site, there have been a disturbingly low proportion of juveniles to adults
recorded for this species.
