Dear friends,

From SEO/BirdLife we want to apply for your help. We have a big problem
because near Ciudad Real (about 185 km. south from Madrid) a private
airport is being built. The airport is limiting to a SPA (Special
Protection Area) and it is inside of an IBA (Important Bird Area) where
there is a very important population of steppe birds. In the SPA and the
IBA, you can find other species of steppe birds like: Great Bustard (Otis
tarda), Little Bustard (Tetrax tetrax), Stone-Curlew (Burhinus oedicnemus),
Black-bellied Sandgrouse (Pterocles orientalis), Pin-tailed Sandgrouse
(Pterocles alchata) and Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni).

First at all, the airport project was inside of a SPA but finally they
thought about it and afterwards a complaint in the European Commission it
was situated outside but just in the limit of the SPA and inside of the
IBA. Nowadays, the case has an other opened complaint in the European
Commission and just now they have order of stopping the works. We are very
concerned about this problem and we are working on this case several years
ago. The construction of the airport inside the IBA will suppose the total
destruction of the steppe area because they will build other buildings and
infrastructures associated.

The case has many problems but one of the more important is that
politicians want to build it in that place because it would be very close
to the high-speed train station. We are not against of building the airport
in this province but we do not agree that the airport will be built in that
place, near SPA and inside of the IBA.

So, Could you, please, send a e-mail to the Spanish Ministry of Environment
[dgcyea at mma.es] as soon as possible the allegations you can find in this
website? Please send us other e-mail to [conservacion at seo.org] for our
knowledge, writing in the subject the word "airport".

You can download the allegations from here in word file:

If you need more information, just let me know.

Please, re-send this e-mail to everybody interested in the environmental

Many thanks in advance.
