We spent the best part of the weekend in various areas of Waterloo County searching for spring migrants and residents. In addition to the species commonly reported the following sightings are of interest. All observations were made at Linear Trail, Cambridge.
Northern Flicker - 2 (Whether these birds represent early migrants or a couple of hardy individuals that over-wintered is impossible to say).
Song Sparrow - 1
Golden-crowned Kinglet - 2
Belted Kingfisher - 1
There were many Common Mergansers and Common Goldeneye in full courtship mode.
Directions to Linear Trail: From Highway 401 take Highway 8 south toward Cambridge. At the bottom of the hill on Shantz Hill Road, turn left onto Fountain Street and at the first set of lights turn right on King Street. Turn right on Eagle Street, left on Hamilton Street and park in the Preston Auditorium parking lot at the corner of Bishop Street and Hamilton Street.
It is sad to see the amount of trash on this delightful trail along the Grand River. Every birder should take a bag and remove some of the garbage on each trip.
