Autumn migrants of at least local interest in York region recently have included a Merlin bathing at Willow Beach, an early Pine Siskin at Keith Dunn's backyard feeder in Keswick, two Red-shouldered Hawks at Hochreiter Road northwest of Holland Landing, and a Wilson's Snipe at George Richardson park in Newmarket. Observed in Newmarket this week were three Purple Finches and one Fox Sparrow (plus one local Pileated Woodpecker) at the Cawthra Mulock reserve on Sunday, a mixed flock of Ruby- and Golden-crowned Kinglets moving through the trees at Thornton Bales CA on Monday, and a local Cooper's Hawk hunting among the backyards along Joe Persechini Drive west of Yonge Street yesterday.
In the northeast part of Newmarket Mike Van den Tillaart's yard list this week included two Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, five juvenile White-throated Sparrows, one adult White-crowned Sparrow and the first returning Dark-eyed Junco.
Many thanks to Keith Dunn and Mike VdT for their input regarding the above birds and many thanks to Stan Long for keeping us posted re: southeast York Region. Are there any other interesting birds being observed in York region? If so, please reply to sender or - if the sightings are of the uncommon-to-rare variety - please post to Ontbirds.
  Ron Fleming, Newmarket
