Hi Ontbirders, The Slaty-backed Gull was still present at 3:55 p.m. this afternoon, Nov 26, at the Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre south of Pembroke (It closes at 4:00 p.m., and it gets dark by then). It was on top of the heap in the landfill, with immature Great Black Backs and Glaucous G., and the usual Herring G. and Ring Bills.
The Slaty could also be seen from the second entrance (400m further on your right) with a 40x scope. That doesn't beat being less than 10 m away from it. Sensitive nose abstain.
A Rough-Legged Hawk is sometimes seen on B-Line nearby the intersection with County Rd 56, as was the case today.
Pay a visit to Lake Doré nearby, there are interesting aquatic birds quite often out there.
Directions from previous posts: To enter the landfill as a guest, call ahead (613-735-7537) to the landfilland ask for Elizabeth Graham. She has some rules and wants everyone tocheck in at the entry office. You wait for the green light and then driveup on the scales to check in. We were instructed to park stay in the vehicle. To get to the landfill, drive north of Eganville staying on Hwy 41 for about14 km., then turn left on B-Line Rd. Go about 2 km. travelling around acurve to the left and at the end of the curve turn left onto County Rd 56,also called Woito Station Road. The landfill is on your right about 3 km.down Cty Rd 56.
