[Ontbirds] Peterborough & Petroglyphs CBCs

The Petroglyphs CBC was held on Sunday, January 4. A total of 38 species and
3932 birds were found.  The highlights were Red-bellied Woodpecker (new for
the count), t Northern Goshawks (equals high), 51 Wild Turkeys (new high),
89 Rock Pigeons (new high), 93 Mourning Doves (new high), 1 Great Gray Owl
(equals high), Belted Kingfisher (equals high).  

Other birds of interest were 3 Barred Owls, 2 Black-backed Woodpeckers, 11
bohemian Waxwings, 43 Pine Grosbeaks, 12 Purple Finches, 3 Red Crossbills,
80 White-winged Crossbills, 206 Common Redpolls, 75 Pine Siskins, 189
American Goldfinches, and 2 Evening Grosbeaks.

 

 

The Peterborough CBC was held earlier on Sunday, December 14. A total of 51
species and 10550 birds were found. The highlights were Short-eared Owl (new
for the count), 2 Bald Eagles (equals high), 5 Cooper's Hawks (new high), 2
Merlins (equals high), 886 Mourning Doves (new high), 3 Belted Kingfishers
(equals high), 535 American Crows (new high), 66 Red-breasted Nuthatches
(new high), 1 Hermit Thrush (Equals high), and 379 Whtie-winged Crossbills
(new high). 

Another new for the count, were the 3 Trumpeter Swans seen during the count
period. Notable misses were Common and Hooded Mergansers, and Common
Redpolls.
