A quiet week with very few early migrant shorebirds and a few species moving into the area from the Saint Lawrence River.
The single CASPIAN TERN which has been at Shirleys Bay all week was joined by 6 more today. There were 3 BONAPARTE'S GULLS at Ottawa Beach and 2 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS below the Des Chenes Rapids on July 5th. On July 10th a SOLITARY SANDPIPER joined the LESSER YELLOWLEGS (4), SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS (2) and many LEAST SANDPIPERS on the extensive Shirleys Bay mud flats. The extremely low water level at the Richmond lagoons has resulted in extensive mud flats ideal for shorebirds. At this location on July 10th there were 110+ KILLDEER, 27 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 18 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS and 8 LEAST SANDPIPERS. A search for sparrows south of the Ottawa Airport on July 10th produced 2 CHIPPING, 5 CLAY-COLORED, 7 FIELD, 6 VESPER, 10 SAVANNAH, 1 GRASSHOPPER, 2 SONG and 1 SWAMP.
Other interesting sightings were;
- BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were seen flying over Ottawa Centertown and Ryan Farm park
- 2 SANDHILL CRANES were seen flying over the bay across from the Rockland boat launch on July 11th
Thanks to everyone who contributed bird observations - Good Birding!
