today's hawk watch was intriguing as the winds were variously from the
south, southeast, southwest, north and northwest ... eek- no wonder the
hawks were confused - as were the hawk counters.

Amongst the 56 species seen today, the highlights were:

> Northern Pintail (Anas acuta) 59
> Hooded Merganser (Lophodytes cucullatus) 27
> Ruddy Duck (Oxyura jamaicensis) 2
> Great Egret (Ardea alba) 3
> Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura) 102
> Northern Harrier (Circus cyaneus) 3
> Sharp-shinned Hawk (Accipiter striatus) 10
> Cooper's Hawk (Accipiter cooperii) 1
> Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) 24
> American Coot (Fulica americana) 7
> Lesser Yellowlegs (Tringa flavipes) 3
> Pectoral Sandpiper (Calidris melanotos) 2
> Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) 2
> Eastern Phoebe (Sayornis phoebe) 1
> Gray Catbird (Dumetella carolinensis) 1 seen feeding on dogwood
> berries
> Yellow-rumped Warbler (Setophaga coronata) 5
