Observers: Kory Renaud

A couple birding the area from Port Colbourne and a local woman with two
kids spent some time up on the tower today and got to see our resident
eagles and a couple of Sharp-shinned Hawks.

Low visibility and cloudy for the first few hours, precluding the heavy
rain that started in the middle of hour 6. The wind was circling a little
bit but mostly came with a South component.

Raptor Observations:
A combination of S winds and rain left us with 20 raptors that went through
today. Despite the low numbers, our resident Osprey and Bald Eagles were,
as usual, providing entertainment. One Osprey caught a fish which the Bald
Eagle wanted. This resulted in a high speed chase across the marsh and a
game of catch which the Bald Eagle ended up winning.

Non-raptor Observations:
A slow raptor day went hand in hand with a slow passerine, dragonfly and
monarch day. The passerine banding station closed up early due to low
volume. 5 R-Throated Hummingbirds and 19 Chimney Swifts flew through, along
with 6 Killdeer, 7 Blue Jays, 27 Cedar Waxwings and 11 American
Goldfinches. At least 100 swallows were present at sunrise but circled
around for some time and flew mostly East. The rain brought out a few
Common Yellowthroats and Song Sparrows who were using the wet leaves to
have a bath. 3 Monarchs.

The weather clearing up tomorrow with winds from the NW, hopefully bringing
some raptors along with it.

Hawk Fest this weekend! See our website for schedule of events
