Results of the Napanee CBC held on December 27th. We had 15 volunteers - the morning started out cold and rainy which we thought would put a damper on the count. However, it was a record year !

68 species were counted beating the previous record of 66 (from 2014). A total of 15,596 birds also beating the 2014 record of 10,203. This is my first year acting as the compiler so it was quite an experience. I have built a 20 year database to reference and over the holidays will take it all the way back to the first count in 1961.

Five new species that have not been seen in at least the past 20 years were: Canvasback (5), Ruddy Duck (47), Snowy Owl (1), Baltimore Oriole (1) and Virginia Rail (1).

New high count records were set: 8712 Canada Goose (vs 6274 in 2011), 54 Mute Swan (vs 26 in 2014), 231 Tundra Swans (vs 178 in 2014), 42 Redhead (vs 22 in 2013). 33 Hooded Mergansers (typical count is 1 or 2), 107 Wild Turkey (vs 88 in 2012) and 5 Swamp Sparrow (vs typical 2).

The count was down for Red-tailed Hawk with only 11 counted vs an average of 25-30 in past years and 163 Mourning Doves vs an average count of 250 - 300.
Thanks to all the volunteers ...Hope to see you all next year !
