The December issue of Ontario Birds has gone to press; it has 64 pages comprised of seven articles. This December installment, we are sure, will become known as the Piping Plover issue. We have a glorious cover painting of a Piping Plover by Barry Kent MacKay and three articles discussing: the recovery of the species in Ontario (by John Brett), the return of breeding Piping Plovers to the Ontario shores of Lake Ontario (by Glenn Coady) and a Piping Plover feeding on amphibian prey (also by Glenn Coady). There is also an article discussing the role of the European Starling in the decline of Red-headed Woodpeckers in Ontario (by Mathew Mair and Sarah Jamieson) and one on the migration of Red-throated Loons on Lake Ontario (by Geoff Carpentier), the latter of which is illustrated with a drawing by Christine Kerrigan. A regular feature of the December issue of Ontario Birds is the write-up on the winner of OFO's annual Distinguished Ornithologist Award, which is given out at the annual meeting in the autumn. Many of you will remember the very deserving recipient of that 2016 award was Ms. Jean Iron (presented by Ken Abraham). Lastly, and sadly, the final article is the In Memoriam tribute to Alan Wormington (by Bill Lamond).
Articles for the April issue are due by 1 March.
