28th Huntsville Christmas Bird Count: 14 December 2021

This count had very good birding conditions: mild temperatures (-5 to 4 C), sun all day, no wind , all lakes and rivers open, and extensive bare ground with a little snow in shaded areas.

Total Observers: 40

Total Species: 53 (average is 39; highest was 54 in 2006 when birding conditions were almost identical to this year)

Total Individuals: 4,698 (average is 3,036)

New High Counts: Bald Eagle (10), Rock Pigeon (555), Common Raven (173)

No new species for the count; cumulative total remains at 97, with 5 additional count week only species

Noteworthy Species: Ring-necked Duck (1), Long-tailed Duck (1),  Ring-necked Pheasant (2), Great Black-backed Gull (Count Week; photographed adult), Belted Kingfisher (2), Bohemian Waxwing (6), Cedar Waxwing (1)

Finches: Evening Grosbeak (1), Pine Grosbeak (12), Purple Finch (1), Red Crossbill (4), White-winged Crossbill (160), Common Redpoll (118), Pine Siskin (46), American Goldfinch (368)
