Visitors:
We thank today's observers for their help and those interested in the
ongoing Hawk Count. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access to the top level
of Hawk Tower is limited to hawk counters and qualified observers only. The
2nd and lower levels are open to the public practising COVID-19 safe
precautions (social distancing). Thank you for your understanding and
involvement.
Weather:
Today was a washout up to mid morning with rain. It cleared up though and
remained sunny with scattered clouds for the rest of the day. The wind was
fresh from the west, but sometimes with a northern element. The temperature
remained in the high teens
Raptor Observations:
A good number of species today at 10, with Sharp-shinned Hawks leading the
way with 160 seen. 43 Turkey Vultures passed by, together with 11
Broad-winged Hawks and 9 American Kestrels. All other species numbers were
below 10.
Non-raptor Observations:
Numbers and species seen decreased across the board today. Except ducks
which continue to increase. Blue Jay numbers were lower at 590, together
with Tree Swallows at 143. It was good to see passing shorebirds;
Black-bellied Plover and both Yellowleg species. An interesting point is
that we haven't seen any sparrows from the Tower, so far this season. The
eBird list is at https://ebird.org/checklist/S95170950
Predictions:
Tomorrow will be similar to this afternoon, except that the wind will be
from the south-west. We are likely to continue seeing Sharp-shinned Hawks
in numbers. Hopefully we will begin to see more buteos, it is getting
close to the time that we should begin to see Red-shouldered Hawks.
