Visitors:
We thank today's observers for their efforts and those interested in the
ongoing Hawk Count. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access to the top level
of Hawk Tower is limited to hawk counters and qualified observers only. The
2nd and lower levels are open to the public practising COVID-19 safe
precautions (social distancing). Thank you for your understanding and
involvement.
Weather:
Temperatures today were cold with starting temperatures below zero and
raising to only a high of 3 C. However, sun was present with clear skies
throughout whole day. Winds started off good with north-westerly and
west-north-westerly winds, however these eventually shifted to westerly.
Raptor Observations:
Better day for raptor movement thanks to favourable conditions. Sightings
include 26 Turkey Vultures, 1 Northern Harrier, 1 Cooper's Hawk, 2
Sharpies, and 1 Bald Eagle. Most notably buteos had a better day with 59
Red Tails, 3 Red Shoulders and a light morph Rough-legged flying over the
marsh.
Non-raptor Observations:
Marsh count led diversity today with 17 Waterfowl species seen today, with
the most notable being a flock of Canvasback and a White Winged Scoter on
the lake. However duck abundance was somewhat lower compared to previous
days. Songbird abundance and diversity was quite low, with American
Goldfinch leading abundance at 375.

Predictions:
Conditions are expected to be similar tomorrow with clear skies and steady
wind, although colder, with a low of -3 during the day and a high of 3.
Winds will be westerly throughout the day with a gradual shift to
south-westerly, hopefully this does not impact raptor movement.
