The 92nd Woodstock CBC was held on Saturday December 20th. 30 field
observers and 14 feeder watchers found 54543 birds of 67 species. Average
is 62 species. The wind picked up through the day but overall, conditions
were good with no precipitation and modest snow cover.
New high counts were Bald Eagle (23, previous high 16 in 2024),
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (2, previous high 1), Common Raven (8, previous
high 3 in 2017), Brown Creeper (55, previous high 18 in 1995) and Winter
Wren (10, ties high from 2019),
Rare species found included: Tundra Swan (4th count), Green-winged Teal
(12th count), Lesser Black-backed Gull (6th count), Short-eared Owl (8th
count), Northern Saw-whet Owl (5th count), Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (6th
count), Peregrine Falcon (7th count), Yellow-rumped Warbler (5th count),
Fox Sparrow (5th count), Harris's Sparrow (2nd count) and White-crowned
Sparrow (10th count). The Harris's Sparrow was a count highlight and has
been at the Skevington feeders in Hickson since December 1st. Visitors are
welcome if they contact us first (viewing must be from inside the house).
Notable misses: Snow Bunting (seen on 52 counts), Northern Shrike (51
counts), Common Merganser (41 counts), American Kestral (64 counts) and
Purple Finch (37 counts).
