Kingston Area Birds 27 January 2024 – 2 February 2024
Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) maintain records in a 50km radius of
MacDonald Park, Kingston. Birders using eBird are encouraged to share their
sightings with ‘Kingston FN’. Alternatively, please email records directly
to me – contact details below. Please note that some sightings may require
review and remain unconfirmed unless stated otherwise. Species in bold type
require completion of a rare bird report available on the KFN website or
directly from me. If indicated, an OBRC report may be required instead (
http://www.ofo.ca/site/Obrcreport). Some iPhone users report that bold type
may be replaced by asterisks.
Overview: It has been a mild week this week in the Kingston Area, but we
are still seeing some Northern Birds making their way down into the circle,
with more reports of Red Crossbills and the appearance of the Bohemian
Waxwings. Keep an eye out this coming week as the temperatures are
supposed to dip slightly.

**DOMESTIC(GRAYLAG) GOOSE- *this goose has shown up again at the Invista
Pond and was reported consistently at this location throughout the week
TRUMPETER SWAN – 6 were seen at the Russell Road Wetland Complex on Jan.
27; 40 were seen at Chaffey’s Lock on Jan. 28; 6 were seen flying over Sand
Hill Road on Jan. 30; 6 were seen in Cataraqui Bay on Jan. 30; 2 were seen
at Desert Lake Resort on Feb. 1; 2 were seen in the Creek near Moscow Dump
on Feb. 1; 1 was seen flying over Highway 38 just south of Verona on Feb.
2; 38 were seen at Lower Brewer Lock on Feb. 2; 38 were seen at Bedford
Mills on Feb. 2; 2 were seen at the Amherstview Sewage Lagoons on Feb. 2
AMERICAN WIGEON- 1 was seen at Heritage Point in Bath on Jan. 31, 1 on Feb.

NORTHERN PINTAIL- 1 bird was seen at the Invista Pond on Jan. 28, 1 on
Jan. 29, 1 on Jan. 30, 1 on Jan. 31
GREEN-WINGED TEAL – 1 bird was seen at Belle Park on Jan. 28, 7 on Jan. 31
WHITE-WINGED SCOTER – 40 were observed at Long Point/Gravelly Bay Road on
Jan. 27, 2 on Jan. 28, 40 on Jan. 30; 6 were seen at Prince Edward Point
NWA on Jan. 27, 34 on Jan. 30, 32 on Feb. 1; 1 was seen at the Howe Island
Ferry East on Jan. 27; 6 were seen on Lake Ontario off Kaiser Crossroad on
Feb. 1
HORNED GREBE – 2 birds were seen at Long Point/Gravelly Bay Roads on Jan.
27, 2 on Jan. 30; 2 were seen at Prince Edward Point on Jan. 30
AMERICAN COOT – 12 birds were seen at the Invista Pond on Jan. 27, 9 on
Jan. 28, 16 on Jan. 29, 15 on Jan. 31, 9 on Feb. 1, 9 on Feb. 2; 2 were
seen on the Waterfront Walkway on Jan. 27; 15 were seen in Cataraqui Bay on
Jan. 30; 1 was seen at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour on Feb. 2
ICELAND GULL – 1 was seen at the Glenora Ferry on Feb. 1
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL – 1 was seen at the Lansdowne Dump on Jan. 27
GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL – still multiple reports of these birds in the
Kingston Circle this week
*HERRING X GREATER BLACK-BACKED HYBRID-a possible hybrid of these two
species was seen at the Lansdowne Dump on Jan. 28
GLAUCOUS GULL – 1 bird was seen at the Violet Dump on Jan. 31, 1 on Feb. 1
COMMON LOON – multiple sightings on Lake Ontario, primarily on the Ferry
Crossings and from both Wolfe and Amherst Island.
DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT – 1 bird was seen flying by The Waterfront
Walkway on Jan. 27; 1 was seen at the Glenora Ferry on Jan. 28
RING-NECKED PHEASANT- 1 bird was seen on Amherst Island on Jan. 27, 3 on
Feb. 2
GOLDEN EAGLE – 1 bird was seen flying over the 401 near Sydenham Road on
Jan. 27; 1 was seen at Norway Lake on Jan. 28
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK – 1 was seen on the Loughborough-Portland Boundary Road
on Jan. 28; 1 was seen on McIntyre Road on Jan. 28; 1 was seen on Amherst
Island on Jan. 28; 1 was seen on Amherst Island on Feb. 1
COOPER'S HAWK – There were multiple sightings of Cooper’s Hawk in the
Kingston Circle this week from all different areas.
BELTED KINGFISHER – 1 bird was seen on Bath Road near Coverdale Marsh on
Jan. 27 and again on Jan. 28
NORTHERN FLICKER – 1 bird was seen at The Marshlands on Jan. 27; 1 was seen
on Amherst Island on Jan. 31, 1 on Feb. 2
AMERICAN KESTREL – 2 were seen on Wolfe Island on Jan. 27, 1 on Jan. 29, 2
on Jan. 30; 1 was seen at Lemoine Point on Jan. 27; 1 was seen on Amherst
Island on Jan. 28; 1 was seen on County Road 6 on Jan. 31
MERLIN – 1 was seen on Wolfe Island on Jan. 27; 1 was seen at the
Beechgrove Complex on Jan. 29; 1 was seen at Lake Ontario Park on Jan. 29;
1 was seen at 1461 English Way on Jan. 30; 1 was seen at the Invista Pond
on Jan. 31
PEREGRINE FALCON – 1 bird was seen at The Marshlands on Jan. 27; 1 was seen
at Princess Towers on Jan. 27; 1 was seen on Amherst Island on Jan. 29
NORTHERN SHRIKE – 2 birds were seen on Amherst Island on Jan. 27, 2 on Jan.
28, 1 on Jan. 29, 1 on Jan. 31, 1 on Feb. 1, 1 on Feb. 2; 1 was seen at the
Invista Pond on Feb. 2; 1 bird was seen on Kyes Road on Feb. 2
FISH CROW – 2 were seen near Ciry Park in Kingston on Jan. 28, 2 again on

TUFTED TITMOUSE – 1 bird was seen at 335 John Street in Gananoque on Feb. 1
HORNED LARK – 29 were seen on Wolfe Island on Jan. 27; 23 were seen at the
Lansdowne Dump on Jan. 28; 14 birds were seen on Garret Road on Jan. 29, 14
on Jan. 30; 11 were seen on Sand Hill Road on Jan. 30
WINTER WREN – 1 bird was seen at Belle Park on Jan. 31
CAROLINA WREN – 1 bird was seen in the Glen Lawrence Woods on Jan. 27; 1
bird was seen in the Balsam Grove area on Jan. 29; 2 birds were seen at 943
McKnight Road on Jan. 29; 1 was seen at a Private Residence on Montreal
Street on Feb. 1
NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD – 1 bird was seen at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour on
Jan. 28
EASTERN BLUEBIRD – 5 were seen on Petworth Road on Jan. 28; 3 were seen on
Cressy Bayside Road on Jan. 28; 5 were seen on Sand Hill Road on Feb. 2; 10
birds were seen at the Napanee Limestone Plain IBA on Feb. 2; 1 was seen on
Warburton Road on Feb. 2
HERMIT THRUSH – 1 bird was continuing at The Marshlands on Jan. 28, 1 on
Jan. 31
BOHEMIAN WAXWING – 1 bird was seen and recorded at Norway Lake on Jan. 28;
20 were seen at the Depot Lakes Campground on Feb. 1; 190 were seen on
Ninth Concession Road near Chippewa on Feb. 1; 250 were seen on Snider Road
on Feb. 2
RED CROSSBILL – 6 were seen at Norway Lake on Jan. 28; 5 were seen at the
Helen Quilliam Sanctuary on Jan. 31; 9 were seen on Echo Lake Road on Feb.
1; 5 were seen on Fifth Lake Road on Feb. 2; 2 were seen on Oak Flats Road
on Feb. 2; 6 were seen on Second Lake Road on Feb. 2; 2 were seen at
Charleston Lake Provincial Park on Feb. 2
LAPLAND LONGSPUR – 1 was seen on Kaiser Cross Road on Jan. 28
SNOW BUNTING – 150 were seen on Wolfe Island on Jan. 27, 590 on Jan. 29,
250 on Jan. 30; 250 were reported from Amherst Island on Jan. 28, 25 on
Jan. 29; 150 were seen on Eden Grove Road on Jan. 28; 45 were seen on Sand
Hill Road on Jan. 30
LARK SPARROW- The Lark Sparrow was seen every day this week on Chelsea
Road
FOX SPARROW – 1 bird was seen at 1726 Bur Brook Road on Feb. 2; 1 bird was
observed eating at a feeder on Sand Hill Road on Jan. 31;
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW – 1 bird was seen at Sandhurst Shores on Jan. 27; 1
was continuing at a private residence East of Kingston on Jan. 27;
SAVANNAH SPARROW- 1 bird was seen on Kaiser Cross Road on Jan. 28;
SONG SPARROW – 1 bird was seen at Lemoine Point on Jan. 27; 1 was seen on
Wolfe Island on Jan. 28; 1 was seen at The Marshlands on Jan. 31; 1 was
seen at Belle Park on Jan. 31; 1 was seen at Links Mills School House on
Feb. 1
SWAMP SPARROW – 2 birds were observed on Wolfe Island on Jan. 27
EASTERN TOWHEE- 1 bird was seen at 1742 Bur Brook Road on Jan. 27 and
again on Jan. 28
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD – 18 birds were continuing at 5545 Perth Road
Crescent on Jan. 27, 17 on Jan. 28, 4 on Jan. 29, 1 on Jan. 30, 23 on Jan.
31, 1 on Feb. 1, 3 on Feb. 2; 4 were seen on Parrot’s Bay Lane on Jan. 27,
8 on Jan. 30, 15 on Jan. 31; 2 were seen at a Private Residence East of
Kingston on Jan. 28, 2 on Feb. 1, 2 on Feb. 2; 26 were seen at Desert Lake
Resort on Feb. 1; 12 birds were seen at 1726 Bur Brook Road on Jan 28
COMMON GRACKLE – 1 bird was seen at 1726 Bur Brook Road on Jan. 28

Naturalists (KFN), or be accompanied by a member, to access both the Martin
Edwards Reserve and Amherstview Sewage Lagoons. Permits are being checked
on a regular basis at Amherstview and those without are being evicted. KFN
members wishing to enter the Invista property must enter through the west
gate and show their membership card to security.
