Total observation time: 5 hours
Official Counter: Hugh Kent
Observers: Liz Kent, Noel Herdman
Visitors:
Thanks to Noel and Liz for helping with the count. A few visitors to the
tower in the morning were lucky enough to see a young male Merlin being
released by Chip, one of the Raptor Banders.
Weather:
Fair, wispy clouds giving slight misty haze. Wind from south and southwest.
Pressure gradually decreasing, clouds light and variable, increasing
towards end of the count.
Raptor Observations:
Most raptors to north and northeast. Broad-winged Hawks topped the bill at
12. Still no sign of large migration. A few small kettles of a handful of
birds were seen, making the most of some weak thermals.
Non-raptor Observations:
Of note was the appearance of around 70 American White Pelicans prospecting
the marsh, but not landing, the largest flock so far this season. Good
variety of flycatchers, including a Yellow-bellied Flycatcher. The list is
at: https://ebird.org/checklist/S272488584
Predictions:
Tomorrow's weather is looking to be similar to today. But hopefully a few
more Raptors will be seen making their way across the marsh on their
migration.
