Update for the week ending on 2026.06.25 (season 1; episode 21)

This week, it's a short update: we're down to 158 reported species and
another new low of just 13 notables in the 50km circle (down from 167 and
16 in my last update). There was one glimmer of excitement on Monday
evening when Vincent Fyson spotted a Tricolored Heron flying over Innes Rd
in Gloucester.  Unfortunately, it has not been relocated.  Likewise, the
Long-tailed Duck, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Semipalmated Plover, Lesser
Black-backed Gull, White-rumped Sandpipers, Tennessee Warblers & Northern
Parula in last weeks update haven't been reported again. Red-breasted
Mergansers & Red-bellied Woodpeckers are still being reported but in not in
regions where they are notable.

It looks like we're in for a hot, humid week with periodic light rain.
Best birding will likely be in the early morning hours (before it gets too
stinking hot!).  Many of our local breeders have hatched their first (and
perhaps only) broods so keep an eye out for awkward and noisy fledglings
demanding to be fed.  Shockingly, the "fall" migration for shorebirds will
be underway very soon - starting with failed breeders or adults that have
already completed their parental duties - so it's also time to start
checking mudflats and shorelines for earlier returnees.
