Ottawa Field Naturalists' Club (OFNC) – Weekly Birding Report Sightings within a 50km radius of Parliament Hill - including eastern Ontario and western Quebec *Compiled by Al Caughey at sightings@ofnc.ca <sightings@ofnc.ca>* Update for the week ending on 2026.07.30 (season 1; episode 26) This week's update comes to you from Saint Andrews New Brunswick! Once again, shorebirds generated the most excitement over the past several days with at least 4 notable peeps arriving at various locations. This caused the number of notable species to spike up to 17 (vs 10 last week); the total number of reported species in the 50km circle also climbed (from 165 to 169). Six notable species in this update were not in the last one: - Black-bellied Plover🔥 [Ottawa (Jul 29)], Red-necked Phalarope🔥 [Ottawa (Jul 26), Prescott and Russell (Jul 30)], Ruddy Turnstone🔥 [Ottawa (Jul 30)], Sanderling🔥 [Ottawa (Jul 30), Gatineau (Jul 30)], Little Gull🔥 [Ottawa (Jul 29)], Cape May Warbler🔥 [Ottawa (Jul 29), Lanark (Jul 29), Renfrew (Jul 29)] Just one notable species from last update is now being seen as non-notable: - Sedge Wren → last notable report on Jul 21 with at least 3 recent non-notable reports at locations in Les Collines-de-l'Outaouais [1], Prescott and Russell [1], Ottawa [1] For the first time since early June, the long-staying Northern Mockingbird has not been reported in Kanata. In addition, the following non-notable species were not seen last week: - Wilson's Phalarope [Prescott and Russell (Jul 23)], Clay-colored Sparrow [Ottawa (Jul 19), Renfrew (Jul 21)], Palm Warbler [Ottawa (Jul 19)] In terms of the coming week, a low-pressure system and steady rain from Saturday evening into Sunday will hopefully ground southbound shorebirds. This means that the best birding spots in the coming days will likely be wet agricultural fields and low-lying mudflats throughout the Ottawa Valley - in particular, I would recommend the creek outlets at the east and west ends of Andrew Haydon Park in Nepean. Later in the week, post-frontal northerly/northwesterly winds could push more early moving songbirds and swallows through the region.
