Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) maintain records in a 50km radius of
MacDonald Park, Kingston. Birders using eBird are encouraged to share their
sightings with ‘Kingston FN’. Alternatively, please email records directly
to me – contact details below. Please note that some sightings may require
review and remain unconfirmed unless stated otherwise. Species in bold type
require completion of a rare bird report available on the KFN website or
directly from me. If indicated, an OBRC report may be required instead (
http://www.ofo.ca/site/Obrcreport). Some iPhone users report that bold type
may be replaced by asterisks.
Overview: It has been a mixed bag of sightings this week. The winter
birds we have been waiting to see have finally started to show up over the
week, followed closely by some early spring arrivals. Although this report
is for the Kingston Circle there have been some great reports from just
outside of the circle as well. Northern Frontenac County is still
reporting some great sightings of northern birds, while Western Prince
Edward County has a number of early spring birds arriving or continuing.

SNOW GOOSE – 1 bird was seen at The Marshlands on Feb. 11, 1 on Feb. 12; 18
were seen on Kidd Road Sheep Farm on Feb. 13
CACKLING GOOSE – 1 bird was seen at a Private Residence East of Kingston
on Feb. 16
TRUMPETER SWAN – There were multiple sightings in the Kingston area, with a
few coming from near Lake Ontario, but primarily north of Kingston where
there is open water.
AMERICAN WIGEON- 1 bird was seen on the Howe Island Ferry on Feb. 10; 1 was
seen at Heritage Point in Bath on Feb. 16
NORTHERN PINTAIL-7 birds were seen on the Howe Island Ferry on Feb. 10; 12
were seen on Wolfe Island on Feb. 11; 1 was seen at Eden Grove Road on Feb.
11, 10 on Feb. 12; 4 birds were seen at The Marshlands on Feb. 13; 35 birds
were on Modler Road on Feb. 13
GREEN-WINGED TEAL – 1 was seen at Amherstview Sewage Lagoon on Feb. 13
CANVASBACK – 1 bird was seen at Waupoos Marina on Feb. 11, 3 on Feb. 12
WHITE-WINGED SCOTER – 80 birds were seen at Prince Edward Point NWA on Feb.
10, 2 on Feb. 11, 120 on Feb. 12, 60 on Feb. 13, 40 on Feb. 14, 10 on Feb.
15 and 10 on Feb. 16; 40 were seen at Long Point/Gravelly Bay Road on Feb.
10; 2 were seen at 2893 County Road 13, PEC on Feb. 15; 1 was seen near
Nicholson Point on Feb. 16
RUDDY DUCK – 1 bird was found on the Waterfront Walkway (LOP to POH) on
Feb. 11; 1 was seen at the Trailhead Pier on Feb. 12
RING-NECKED PHEASANT – 1 bird was seen on Amherst Island on Feb. 10
AMERICAN COOT – Still multiple sightings coming in from the open water
along the Waterfront in Kingston this week
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE- 1 bird was reported from the Lansdowne Dump on
Feb. 11
GLAUCOUS GULL – 1 bird was seen in Cataraqui Bay on Feb. 11; 1 was seen at
the Marshlands on Feb. 12
*RED-THROATED LOON *– 1 was seen at Island View Park on Feb. 13 and again
on Feb. 14
COMMON LOON – 1 was seen at Prince Edward Point NWA on Feb. 10; 3 were seen
at Island View Park on Feb. 13
TURKEY VULTURE – 1 bird was seen at 3545 Harrowsmith Road on Feb. 10; 1
was seen on Amherst Island on Feb. 10; 1 was seen on Hwy. 33 near Finkle’s
Shore Park on Feb. 10; 1 was seen at Treasure Island Marina on Feb. 11
GOLDEN EAGLE – 1 bird was seen at South Shore Road near Hay Bay on Feb. 10;
1 was seen on Amherst Island on Feb. 11
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK – 1 bird was seen at Lemoine Point on Feb. 11; 1 bird
was seen at Bayshore Estates on Feb. 11; 1 bird was seen at Russell Road
Wetland Complex on Feb. 11; 1 was seen at a Private Residence North of
Perth Road Village on Feb. 13; 1 was seen at a Private Residence on
Montreal Street on Feb. 13
COOPER'S HAWK – 1 bird was seen at 58 Richmond Park Drive in Napanee on
Feb. 10; 1 bird was seen in Balsam Grove on Feb. 11, 1 on Feb. 16; 1 was
seen on Amherst Island on Feb. 11; 1 was seen on Queens University Campus
near Jeffery Hall on Feb. 13; 1 was seen at Belle Park on Feb. 16; 1 was
seen at 1726 Bur Brook Road on Feb. 16; 1 was seen at a Private Residence
on Montreal Street on Feb. 16
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK – 1 was seen at Black Rapids on Feb. 10; 1 was seen at
Russell Road Wetland Complex on Feb. 11; 1 was seem on Amherst Island on
Feb. 13 and again on Feb. 14
BELTED KINGFISHER – 1 was seen on Amherst Island on Feb. 10, 1 on Feb. 11;
1 was seen on Bath Road near Collins Bay on Feb. 11, 1 on Feb. 15; 1 was
seen West of Collin’s Creek on Feb. 14
NORTHERN FLICKER – 1 was seen at 6535 County Road 2, Odessa on Feb. 10; 1
was seen at Ivy Lea on Feb. 11; 2 were seen on Washburn Road on Feb. 12
AMERICAN KESTREL – 1 was seen on Wolfe Island on Feb. 10, 2 on Feb. 15, 2
on Feb 16; 1 was seen at Lemoine Point on Feb. 12, 1 on Feb. 13, 1 on Feb.
15; 1 was seen on Simcoe Island on Feb. 13; 1 was seen on Kaiser Cross Road
on Feb. 16
MERLIN – 1 was seen at the Napanee Fair Grounds on Feb. 10; 1 was seen near
Earl Street on Feb. 12; 1 was seen at a Private Residence East of Kingston

FISH CROW – 2 birds were seen in City Park on Feb. 11, 2 on Feb. 12 and 2

TUFTED TITMOUSE – 1 bird was seen at a Private Residence on Montreal Street
on Feb. 13 and continued throughout the week; 1 was seen near Moore’s Creek
east of Kingston on Feb. 16; 2 were seen on the Gananoque Waterfront on
Feb. 16
HORNED LARK – 3 birds were seen on South Shore Road near Hay Bay on Feb.
10; 1 was seen at the Russell Road Wetland Complex on Feb. 13; 14 were seen
on Wolfe Island on Feb. 16; 8 were seen on Modler Road on Feb. 16
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET – 1 bird was seen at Belle Park on Feb. 10; 1 was seen
at Prince Edward Point NWA on Feb. 13
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH – 3 were seen at Little Cataraqui Conservation Area
on Feb. 10; 1 was seen at Lemoine Point on Feb. 10; 1 was seen at The
Marshlands on Feb. 10
CAROLINA WREN – 1 bird was seen at 573 Alfred Street on Feb. 10; 1 was seen
at Howe Island Ferry Road on Feb. 10; 1 was seen at a Private Residence on
Montreal Street on Feb. 14, 1 on Feb. 15 and Feb. 16; 1 was seen on Balsam
Grove on Feb. 15; 2 were seen at Belle Park on Feb. 16; 1 was seen in
Grenville Park on Feb. 16; 2 were seen at 943 McKnight Road on Feb. 16; 2
were seen on the Gananoque Waterfront on Feb. 16
NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD – 1 bird was seen at 685 King Street West on Feb. 10;
1 was also seen on Yonge Street on Feb. 10 (possibly the same bird as King
Street as they are in the same area); 1 report from Union and Yonge Street,
also likely the same bird; 1 was seen at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour on Feb.
10, 1 on Feb. 11, 1 on Feb. 13; 1 has been seen at a Private Residence in
Amherstview this week
EASTERN BLUEBIRD – There were multiple sightings of bluebirds within the
Kingston circle this week.
CEDAR WAXWING-15 birds were seen on Parrot’s Bay Lane on Feb. 10; 24 were
seen at 104 Hardwood Lane on Feb. 12, 3 on Feb. 13 and 4 on Feb. 16; 3 were
seen on Amherst Island on Feb. 13; 7 were seen at 5545 Perth Road Crescent
on Feb. 15; 14 were seen on 2893 County Road 13, PEC on Feb. 15; 4 were
seen at Parrott’s Bay Conservation Area on Feb. 15
BOHEMIAN WAXWING – 47 were seen in Elgin on Feb. 12
PURPLE FINCH – 1 was seen at a Private Residence East of Kingston on Feb.
15; 1 was seen at Links Mills School House on Feb. 16
RED CROSSBILL – 3 were seen at Little Cataraqui Conservation Area on Feb.
10; 5 were seen on Bedford Road on Feb. 11, 2 on Feb. 14; 2 were seen on
Hinchinbrooke Road on Feb. 13; there were birds seen at a Private Residence
north of Perth Road Village on Feb. 13; 1 was seen at the Helen Quilliam
Sanctuary on Feb. 14
PINE SISKIN – 1 bird was seen at 104 Hardwood Lane on Feb. 11, 1 on Feb. 13
SNOW BUNTING – 3 were seen on the edge of the Circle on Mountain Road,
Stone Mills on Feb. 10; 8 were seen on the Napanee Limestone Plain IBA on
Feb. 11; 77 were seen on Wolfe Island on Feb. 15, 505 on Feb. 16; 7 were
seen on Modler Road on Feb. 16; 40 were seen on Amherst Island on Feb. 16
LARK SPARROW- The individual bird continued this week on Chelsea Road
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW – 1 bird was continuing at a Private Residence East
of Kingston on Feb. 13 and again on Feb. 15 and Feb. 16
SONG SPARROW – 1 bird was seen at a private residence on King Street W. on
Feb. 10
SWAMP SPARROW – 1 bird was seen at Little Cataraqui Conservation Area on
Feb. 10; 1 was seen at Belle Park on Feb. 16
EASTERN TOWHEE- 1 bird was continuing at 1726 Bur Brook Road on Feb. 12;
1 was seen at a Private Residence on Haig Road on Feb. 13
EASTERN MEADOWLARK- 1 early bird was seen on Simcoe Island on Feb. 13
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD – Although still considered a rare bird sighting
over the winter here in the Kingston Area there have been multiple
sightings in the Kingston Circle. There are increasing numbers being
reported on a daily basis, with a high count this week of 120 at 584 Sand
Bay Road on Feb. 11
BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD – 1 bird was seen at 5545 Perth Road Crescent on Feb.
13, 1 on Feb. 14, 1 on Feb. 16; 1 was seen at 125 Nina’s Lane on Feb. 13
RUSTY BLACKBIRD – 2 birds were seen on Amherst Island on Feb. 11, 2 on Feb.
13
COMMON GRACKLE – 2 were seen at 968 Alpine Court on Feb. 14; 1 was seen on
Wolfe Island on Feb. 15

Please note that you must be a card-carrying member of Kingston Field
Naturalists (KFN), or be accompanied by a member, to access both the Martin
Edwards Reserve and Amherstview Sewage Lagoons. Permits are being checked
on a regular basis at Amherstview and those without are being evicted. KFN
members wishing to enter the Invista property must enter through the west
gate and show their membership card to security.
