Visitors:
A big thanks to the gang that was out there today helping spot these
birds... Ken, Matt, Chris and D, Su, Ronnie and Cary.
Weather:
Fantastic winds from the SW... blowing strong and consistent right up the
cliff for the entire count period (along with a whole lot of sand)!
Initially the sky was completely overcast but this eventually cleared to
mostly clear blue skies. Temps were quite comfortable starting at 15C and
got to a high of 23C. The pressure was dropping throughout the day.
Raptor Observations:
Well there weren't a LOT of raptors flying today but the QUALITY was what
we got... a total of 57 Peregrines cruised past which is now our 2nd
highest 1-day count ever! (the highest is still 77 from Oct 07, 2017).
There was a good mix of both adults and youngsters and the lighting was
great for photos once the sun moved around to more behind us. At times the
birds were being pushed in off the cliff edge and passed directly overhead
at probably 30m. Awesome!
Non-raptor Observations:
Small numbers of non-raptors were in the air like Blue Jays and what looked
like a flock of Am Pipits... and I had some Hermit Thrushes, GC and RC
Kinglets and a White Breasted Nuthatch along the roadway.
Predictions:
Forecast is for straight W winds for Thursday which will definitely slow
down any flight. Friday may be more promising but only if the wind stays
more from the NW. The weather itself looks like sun and cloud for the next
couple of days.
