Visitors:
Thank you to our kind observers for donating your time and eyes to the
count, Noel and Peter, thank you!
Weather:
Today was very chilly with stronger winds than yesterday. The winds stayed
northeast most of the day which brought in a great variety of raptors.
Raptors slowed down by the end of the day likely due to the rain in the
afternoon.
Raptor Observations:
The far majority today was again red-tailed hawks with just over 400. Every
so often a red-shoulder would join the mix. We were happy to see an
increase in sharp shinned hawks today with 23. Turkey vultures, harriers,
and coopers hawks were also present today in low numbers. The highlights of
the day were three golden eagles representing all age groups: adult,
subadult and immature, and a gorgeous dark morph rough-legged hawk.
Non-raptor Observations:
Passerines were very quiet today, although goldfinches continue to migrate
in good numbers. The same species are still present on the marsh as usual
for the last few weeks, and numbers on the lake are increasing. Scaup,
hooded and red-breasted merganser, horned grebe, a common loon and
bufflehead were spotted on the lake today. The species count was relatively
low compared to most days, likely due to the frigid wind.
Predictions:
Tomorrow looks quite chilly again with westerly winds. We may see
stragglers migrating brought in by the winds today!
