Visitors:
Big thanks to Nicole, Matt, Noel and Juliette for their help in observing
and recording. It was nice to meet Mike, John and Sally and Cindy and Ron.
Thanks for your interest in the Hawk Watch.
Weather:
Wind was light to moderate from the south east, with variable cloud cover
of some solid and some wispy cloud. Temperature gradually rose from 22c to
28c early afternoon. Visibility was good throughout the day.
Raptor Observations:
Sharp-shinned Hawk (147) took the top spot with Turkey Vultures (85) slowly
ramping up their numbers. There were a few Broad-winged Hawk (56)
stragglers mostly hanging around with the Turkey Vultures. American Kestrel
(37) numbers improved from yesterday and Northern Harriers (9) were a lot
less. The remainder of ten species each numbered below 10.
Non-raptor Observations:
Somebody has slightly turned the Blue Jay (604) tap towards on today with a
few flocks passing by. Ducks are still around, but in slightly lower
numbers. A similar mix of Warblers as yesterday with Northern Parula and
Wilson's Warbler again seen. Indigo Bunting was a new species for the
season. Monarch Butterfly numbers increased a bit today with 84 seen. The
list is at https://ebird.org/checklist/S150508092
Predictions:
A sunny day with light to moderate winds from the east is forecast
tomorrow. Likely we will get a similar mix as today, but will the Turkey
Vulture migration start to ramp up together with Blue Jays?
