Around 2pm this afternoon (June 9 2025) I found what I think was a male Eurasian Tree Sparrow at the entrance to Pitopiko Park rest area on the south side of Highway 11 between Hearst and Longlac. It was a similar size and shape to a House Sparrow but the crown was solid cinnamon/brown, not grey with cinnamon sides like a House Sparrow. It had a small black patch on the chin - much less that the typical House Sparrow bib - and numerous narrow brown stripes down it’s back - overall lighter colouring than House Sparrows. It did not have an eye line so was not a tardy American Tree Sparrow. I was alerted to its presence by the strange sounds it was making - nothing I’ve ever heard a House Sparrow make. Unfortunately I do not have a camera so was unable to take photos, and it did not call again after I got my bins on it.

Posting here so anyone driving that route this summer can stop there and verify or correct the sighting. Even if it was “just” a House Sparrow, that would still be a significant sighting for this very remote, undeveloped location and needs to be reported for the Breeding Bird Atlas.

Pitopiko Rest area is on the south side of Highway 11 about 19km west of Highway 631. It is about 1/2 way between Hearst and Longlac. See eBird checklist S248735032
