Observers: John Winebrenner, Lisa Silvey, Liz Kent
Visitors:
A big thanks to John and Lisa for helping observe in the morning. It was
another good day for visitors with a significant number able to see the
Hawks that the Banders brought to the Tower. Thanks for all your interest.
Weather:
Wind generally from the south moderate initially then decreasing early
afternoon, with temperature slowly rising from 22c to a max of 32c in the
afternoon. A thin cloud covered most of the sky all day.
Raptor Observations:
Pretty similar mix to yesterday, but with lower numbers. It was good to see
all the falcons, with a Peregrine passing by in the last hour. The banders
brought a Sharp-shinned Hawk and an adult Red-tailed Hawk up to the tower
much to the interest of the visitors present. There were a few Bald Eagles
late in the day which moved through to the Northwest.
Non-raptor Observations:
Pretty standard day for this time in September, with 6 species of warbler,
2 vireo species and slightly reduced numbers of waterbirds on the Marsh.
The low marsh water levels continue to pay dividends with a Wilson's Snipe
and Short-billed Dowitcher seen. Hirundine numbers are reducing, but a few
are still high up catching insects over the marsh.
The list is at https://ebird.org/checklist/S118995773
Predictions:
The forecast is for possible thunderstorms early on in the day followed by
scattered clouds and a moderate westerly wind which has a northern
component from midday. This may bring more buteos and other hawks, let's
hope so as the Broad-wing Hawk window is closing....
