Kingston Area Birds 13 January 2024 – 19 January 2024
Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) maintain records in a 50km radius of
MacDonald Park, Kingston. Birders using eBird are encouraged to share their
sightings with ‘Kingston FN’. Alternatively, please email records directly
to me – contact details below. Please note that some sightings may require
review and remain unconfirmed unless stated otherwise. Species in bold type
require completion of a rare bird report available on the KFN website or
directly from me. If indicated, an OBRC report may be required instead (
http://www.ofo.ca/site/Obrcreport). Some iPhone users report that bold type
may be replaced by asterisks.
Overview: It was a great week for birds, with a strong influx of the
Winter Finches as well as some birds that have not moved further south. A
few excellent sightings this week, highlighted by a continuing Lark Sparrow
and a probable Western Meadowlark.

CACKLING GOOSE – 4 birds were seen at Centennial Park in Bath on Jan. 13; 2
were seen on Wolfe Island on Jan. 16; 1 was seen on Country Club Drive in
Bath on Jan. 16
TRUMPETER SWAN – 10 birds were seen at Chaffey’s Lock on Jan. 14, 69 on
Jan. 18; 2 were seen in the Cataraqui River on Jan. 16; 69 were counted at
Lower Brewers Lock on Jan. 17; 3 were seen at Bedford Mills on Jan. 18, 13
on Jan. 19
WHITE-WINGED SCOTER – 12 birds were seen at Prince Edward Point NWA on Jan.
13, 4 on Jan. 14, 6 on Jan. 18; 8 were seen at Long Point/Gravelly Bay Road
on Jan. 14
AMERICAN COOT – 6 birds were seen in the Invista Pond on Jan. 17; 3 were
seen in Elevator Bay on Jan. 18; 1 was seen at Lemoine Point on Jan. 19
GLAUCOUS GULL – 1 bird was seen at the Lansdowne Dump on Jan. 15; 1 was
seen at the Violet Dump on Jan. 17
NORTHERN HARRIER -still being reported in great numbers, primarily from
Wolfe and Amherst Island
COOPER'S HAWK – 1 bird was seen on Country Club Drive in Bath on Jan. 13; 1
bird was seen on 7th Line Rd. Wolfe Island on Jan. 15; 1 was seen on Taylor
Kidd Blvd. on Jan. 15; 1 was seen on Spooner Road off Latimer Rd. on Jan.
18; 1 was seen on Amherst Island on Jan. 18; 1 was seen at Chaffey’s Lock
on Jan. 18; 1 was seen at a private residence East of Kingston on Jan. 19
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK – many birds still being reported in the Kingston Circle
this week, primarily on Wolfe and Amherst Islands
BELTED KINGFISHER – 1 bird was seen in Adolphustown on Jan. 13; 1 was seen
at Bedford Mills on Jan. 19
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER- 1 bird was seen in Glen Lawrence Woods on Jan.
17; 1 was seen at the Marshlands on Jan. 17; 1 was seen on Marble Rock Road
on Jan. 17
NORTHERN FLICKER – 2 birds were seen at a Private Cottage near Morton on
Jan. 14; 1 was seen at The Marshlands on Jan. 17 and again on Jan. 19
AMERICAN KESTREL – 1 was seen on Sand Hill Road on Jan. 13; 2 were seen on
Wolfe Island on Jan. 15; 1 bird was seen on Kaiser Cross Road, PEC on Jan.
15; 1 was seen on Amherst Island on Jan. 15, 1 on Jan. 17, 1 on Jan. 18
MERLIN – 1 bird was seen on South Shore Road, Hay Bay on Jan. 13; 1 was
seen on Wolfe Island on Jan. 16, 1 on Jan. 18, 1 was seen on Fairfax Road
on Jan. 18
PEREGRINE FALCON – 1 was seen at Princess Towers on Jan. 15; 1 was seen at
353 Princess Street on Jan. 19
NORTHERN SHRIKE – 1 bird was seen on Simcoe Island on Jan. 16; 1 was seen
on 6th Concession, near Joyceville on Jan. 18; 1 was seen on Spooner Road
off Latimer Rd. on Jan. 18; 1 was seen on Amherst Island on Jan. 18 and
again on Jan. 19
CAROLINA WREN – 1 bird was seen in the Balsam Grove area on Jan. 13 and
again on Jan. 19; 1 bird was still seen at a Private Residence on Montreal
Street on Jan. 14 and again on Jan. 19; 1 bird was seen on McKnight St. on
Jan. 15
NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD – 1 continuing bird was seen at Portsmouth Olympic
Harbour on Jan. 19
EASTERN BLUEBIRD – 6 birds were seen on Warburton Road on Jan. 15; 3
birds were seen at 3993 Perth Road on Jan. 16; 2 were seen on the edge of
the Kingston Circle on Morrison Point Road in Prince Edward County on Jan.

HERMIT THRUSH – 1 bird was still seen at The Marshlands on Jan. 17 and
again on Jan. 19
AMERICAN PIPIT – 1 bird was seen on County Road 9 near Hay Bay on Jan. 18
PURPLE FINCH – 1 bird was seen at 1726 Bur Brook Road on Jan. 13, 1 on Jan.
16 and 1 on Jan. 19; 2 were seen on Sand Hill Road on Jan. 14
RED CROSSBILL – 2 were seen at the Helen Quilliam Sanctuary on Jan. 17
HORNED LARK-24 birds were seen on White Church Road on Jan. 14; 8 birds
were seen on Amherst Island on Jan. 14; 23 birds were seen on Wolfe Island
on Jan. 15, 23 on Jan. 16, 12 on Jan. 18; 12 were seen on Fairfax Rd. on
Jan. 15; 22 birds were seen on Chambers Rd. on Jan. 15
LAPLAND LONGSPUR – 1 bird was seen on Wolfe Island on Jan. 15, 1 on Jan.
16, 1 on Jan. 18; 1 bird was seen on Amherst Island on Jan. 19
SNOW BUNTING – There were multiple sightings of Snow Buntings this week
from all over the circle, primarily on Wolfe and Amherst Islands but also
multiple sightings East of Kingston.
LARK SPARROW-1 bird was found at a private residence on Chelsea Road in
Kingston on Jan. 15 and continued to be seen throughout the week. The
owner of the house has been gracious and is allowing people an opportunity
to come and observe the bird, so please be respectful if doing so.
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW – 1 bird was seen at a private residence East of
Kingston on Jan. 13, Jan. 14 and Jan. 16, 1 on Jan. 17, 1 on Jan. 18; 1 was
seen at 4835 Highway 2 on Jan. 15
SONG SPARROW – 1 bird was seen on Chelsea Road on Jan. 16 and again on Jan.
17 and again on Jan. 18
SWAMP SPARROW – 1 bird was seen at Little Cataraqui Conservation Area on
Jan. 15; 1 was seen on Staples Lane on Jan. 18; 2 birds were seen at The
Marshlands on Jan. 19
EASTERN TOWHEE- a rare find for this time of year, 1 bird was seen at
1726 Bur Brook Road on Jan. 13; 1 bird was also seen at a feeder on Haig
Road on Jan. 18
*WESTERN MEADOWLARK- 1 bird for this area was discovered on 7th Line,
Wolfe Island on Jan. 15 and seen again on Jan. 17. Initially reported as
an Eastern Meadowlark it is now under review as a possible Western
Meadowlark
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD – 22 were continuing at 5545 Perth Road Crescent on
Jan. 13, 26 on Jan 14, 16 on Jan. 17, 18 on Jan. 18 and 13 on Jan. 19; 2
birds were seen at a private residence East of Kingston on Jan. 13 and
continued throughout the week; 1 was seen on Marble Rock Road on Jan. 14, 1
on Jan. 16, 1 on Jan. 17; 1 bird was seen in the Glen Lawrence Woods on
Jan. 15; 2 were seen at Witse Creek at Sand Bay Rd. on Jan. 15; 1 was seen
at 1726 Bur Brook Road on Jan. 19
*BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD *– 1 bird was seen at 1726 Bur Brook Road on Jan. 19

Please note that you must be a card-carrying member of Kingston Field
Naturalists (KFN), or be accompanied by a member, to access both the Martin
Edwards Reserve and Amherstview Sewage Lagoons. Permits are being checked
on a regular basis at Amherstview and those without are being evicted. KFN
members wishing to enter the Invista property must enter through the west
gate and show their membership card to security.
