Visitors:
Thank you to our dedicated observers Jaron, Robin, Mike, Christine, Hugh,
Daniel. Great seeing lots of visitors on the tower with it being the last
day the park is open. We were able to show off a Golden Eagle to many.
Thanks to Brett and Vicki who helped spot hawks. Great to chat with Chris
and his son Josh. Its very good to see a young boy as keen as Josh taking
up this great hobby.
Weather:
The hawk count started foggy with light winds from the north. Things
cleared up in the afternoon with winds shifting to the south west.
Temperatures rose throughout the day to 21c. Scattered clouds all day.
Raptor Observations:
The weak winds really did hamper the number of birds we saw. Highlights for
the day were the Red-shouldered and Golden Eagle that showed up in the
afternoon. The species that came through in the most numbers was the Turkey
Vultures (996), mostly passing well north of the tower.
Non-raptor Observations:
Non raptor highlights were some late season Blackpoll Warblers (3) and lots
of Cedar waxwings (333). The afternoon sky was filled with huge
murmurations of European Starlings (16700). The list is at
https://ebird.org/checklist/S405432361
Predictions:
Tomorrow the wind is coming out of the north-west. We can hope that those
good winds bring in more late season birds such as Rough-Legged Hawk and
Golden Eagles.
