Visitors:
Huge thanks to our counters - Jaron, Kory, Hugh, Liz, and Kit! Was nice to
see Pille and everyone who visited the tower today to break up the quiet
between the raptor flights!
Weather:
Slightly chilly morning with a surprising north wind which shifted to a
south-eastern wind relatively quickly. Nice periods of sun mid morning
morning but faded to clouds in the early afternoon. Highs around 19C
Raptor Observations:
Started off very slow but had some clear views of Northern Harriers (5)
flying over. 4 local Bald Eagles chasing each other and harassing marsh
ducks gave us some entertainment as we waited for the raptors to emerge. A
single Golden Eagle around mid morning acted as the vanguard and broke the
drought. Turkey Vultures (170) took the top spot as expected with
Red-Tailed (28) and Red-Shouldered (20) filling in the gaps. Rough-Legged
(5) came in far out but viewable with a nice mix of both dark and light
morphs.
Non-raptor Observations:
Full list can be found at https://ebird.org/checklist/S407341217
Even the birds seemed to want to take a lazy day with the time change.
American Crows (462) and Cedar Waxwings (361) were the top movers today. On
the marsh front Ring-Necked Ducks (1106), Gadwalls (386) and Mallards (230)
were the most numerous. Exciting to have views of a Common Loon actively
fishing in the lake. Some drama just off the tower with Pied-Billed Grebes
(54) fighting over caught fish and territory. Unfortunately no familiar
faces appeared around the tower today but a goliath sized carp was seen
splashing close to the shore.
Predictions:
Another cloudy day with possible short periods of sun. Wind is looking to
be heading in from the southeast again but with how its been we might be
surprised with a different direction. High temperature around 18C. Expected
similar numbers of Raptors but hoping for more!
