Observation end time: 16:00:00
Total observation time: 9 hours
Official Counter: Tom Bolohan
Observers: Dave Brown, Harold V., Mac McAlpine, Su Ross-Redmond
Visitors:
A ton of visitors today with it being Day 1 of the open house weekend
events at Hawk Cliff. A huge thanks to everyone that helped with spotting
and tallying up the birds today... Tom B, Harold V, Su, Mac, Tom S and many
others on the viewing platform.
Weather:
Winds were light from the SW and SSW for the day providing a bit of lift
along the cliff edge. Some nice cloud in the area but more high level
rather than cumulus. Temp continues to be way too warm starting at 14C and
getting to a high of 26C.
Raptor Observations:
A very similar flight to yesterday with a total of 261 birds. Almost all of
the birds were either right along the cliff riding the updraft or just
inland a bit. The bulk of today's flight was Sharpies (89), Am Kestrels
(126) and N Harriers (20). There were smaller numbers of other species
including Osprey (6), Bald Eagle (3) that we figured were migrants versus
local family groups, Cooper's Hawks (5), a lone Redtail, Merlins (8) and a
highlight was the Peregrines (3).
Non-raptor Observations:
Definitely not as many passerines on the move today. However, the Blue Jays
continued to push through in good numbers for the first 3 hours of the
morning.
Monarch Count: 300+ today. Many visitors commented that there seemed to be
quite a few flying past the viewing platform.
Predictions:
The forecasts have been a bit off for the past several days... BUT if the
wind forecast holds with NW winds for the bulk of Sunday then it may bring
more birds down to the lake shore and result in a bigger flight. Fingers
crossed.
