Total observation time: 4 hours
Official Counter: Kiah Jasper
Observers: Alessandra Wilcox, Hugh Kent, Liz Kent
Visitors:
Thanks to Alessandra, Paul, Hugh and Kent for providing nice company during
the watch. The bird banders also popped by for a visit in the afternoon. It
was nice to see Josh stop by the tower again. We had 8 visitors who also
showed interest in the hawkwatch.
Weather:
Wind starting off WNW, switching around to SW by the end of the
observation. Cloud cover switching between 50% and 70% throughout. It was a
hot day on the tower, with temperatures reaching 27 degrees C. Visibility
was good during the watch (20+ km).
Raptor Observations:
It was a quiet day for raptors, though not too unexpected given the winds
today. It was nice to see 5 Northern Harriers (including 2 grey ghosts) and
5 American Kestrels. Singles of Sharp-shinned and Cooper's Hawks migrated
by as well.
Non-raptor Observations:
It is evident that fall migration is underway, with decent numbers of
American Goldfinches and Cedar Waxwings passing by. Our highlight was a
nice Olive-sided Flycatcher that perched beside the tower. 4 warbler
species were recorded, with the most common species being Cape May and
Yellow-rumped. Bobolinks and two Semipalmated Plovers flew by during the
morning as well. eBird link with sightings available here -

Predictions:
The winds are predicted to shift from west to northwest mid morning, which
will hopefully bring us more raptors. Currently the wind is meant to be
coming from the north on Monday, so we should hopefully see a larger uptick
in activity.
