Visitors:
Great help today observing from Karen, Ian, Larry, Noel and John. Many
visitors to the Tower today showed great interest in the Hawk Watch
including Nicholas, Tiffany and Jen, Eric, Glenn and Kate.
Weather:
Unexpectedly overcast today (not the forecast), but wind light to moderate
from the north. Temperature comfortable at around 20c. Good visibility but
low cloud base.
Raptor Observations:
Broad-winged Hawks (85) arrived today flying through but no big kettles
possible due the lack of thermals in an overcast sky. Next were
Sharp-shinned Hawks (63) and American Kestrels (38). Others in lower
numbers made a species count of 10 and a total of 233.
Non-raptor Observations:
Many warblers overflew us today, frustratingly without landing. However we
did increase the warbler species count to 9, thanks to a mixed flock
passing through the trees round the Tower late afternoon. Cape May Warbler
and Blackburnian were new for the season, together with a Swainson's Thrush
late in the day. Cedar Waxwing (335) numbers were again good together with
many swallows passing by at a high level. The list is at
https://ebird.org/checklist/S149482957
Predictions:
Forecast is for north winds again and partly cloudy. Hopefully it will not
be as overcast as today, giving the opportunity for thermals to form,
helping along the Broad-winged Hawks. Expect more migration from
Sharp-shinned Hawks and American Kestrels.
