Update for the week ending on 2026.06.18 (season 1; episode 20)
First, congrats to the Canadian Men's Soccer team for their World Cup
victory over Qatar tonight (Thursday)!
*This week, we're down to 167 reported species and a new low of just 16
notables in the 50km circle (down from 180 and 25 in my last update). In
spite of the decline in notables, there were three that were not on the
list last week: a Long-tailed Duck in Gatineau, Red-breasted Mergansers in
Ottawa and Gatineau and finally, White-rumped Sandpipers in both Ottawa and
Carleton Place. *
Several notables in last week's update were not reported this week -
including: Brant, Mallard x American Black Duck (hybrid), Great
Black-backed Gull, Greater Yellowlegs, Ruddy Turnstone, Arctic Tern,
American White Pelican, Loggerhead Shrike and Gray-cheeked Thrush. The
following were still seen but not in regions where they are notable:
Trumpeter Swans, Black-crowned Night Heron, Dark-eyed Junco, Golden-winged
Warbler, Brewster's Warbler (hybrid).
*The forecast for the coming week is unsettled conditions & periodic rain
over the weekend changing to clearer, warmer weather midweek. With most of
our residents in peak breeding/nesting season, songbirds will likely hunker
down over the weekend but the low-pressure system could drop late-migrating
shorebirds and waterfowl into mudflats and shorelines. Once conditions
improve, local breeders will be active in woodlots; while wetlands and
marshes could good spots to find bitterns, rails and who knows what else! *
