Kingston Area Birds 6 January 2024 – 12 January 2024
Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) maintain records in a 50km radius of
MacDonald Park, Kingston. Birders using eBird are encouraged to share their
sightings with ‘Kingston FN’. Alternatively, please email records directly
to me – contact details below. Please note that some sightings may require
review and remain unconfirmed unless stated otherwise. Species in bold type
require completion of a rare bird report available on the KFN website or
directly from me. If indicated, an OBRC report may be required instead (
http://www.ofo.ca/site/Obrcreport). Some iPhone users report that bold type
may be replaced by asterisks.
Overview:
It is the first full week of the New Year and the sightings are coming in
strong to start us off. With some snow and colder weather the winter
finches started to make appearances in the Kingston area this week. There
were also some notable birds still in the area as well.
Parish Notes:
As we are into the winter season now I will not be reporting many of the
birds that are staying consistent in the area unless they are still
classified as a rare species. Many of the ducks, sparrows and finches are
to be expected in the area at this time.

*DOMESTIC (Graylag) GOOSE- *1 bird was seen in the Cataraqui Bay/Invista
area throughout the week
*SNOW GOOSE/CANADA GOOSE HYBRID – *the Cataraqui Bay bird was continuing
this week
CACKLING GOOSE – 1 was seen at Centennial Park in Bath on Jan. 6; 2 were
seen in Cataraqui Bay on Jan. 7, 1 on Jan. 9; 1 was seen on Amherst Island
on Jan. 7; 1 was seen at Heritage Point in Bath on Jan. 8
TRUMPETER SWAN – 33 were seen at Lower Brewers Locks on Jan. 6, 32 on
Jan. 7, 48 on Jan. 9; 12 were seen at Davis Lock on Jan. 6; 77 were counted
at Chaffey’s Lock on Jan. 7; 2 were seen on Amherst Island on Jan. 7; 10
were seen on Wolfe Island on Jan. 12
AMERICAN WIGEON- 2 were seen in Cataraqui Bay on Jan. 6, 1 on Jan. 7, 2 on
Jan. 8, 3 on Jan. 9; 1 was seen at Heritage Point in Bath on Jan. 11
NORTHERN PINTAIL- 2 birds were still seen in Cataraqui Bay on Jan. 6, 2 on
Jan. 9, 2 on Jan. 12; 5 birds were seen on the Invista Property on Jan. 7,
4 on Jan. 8; 1 was seen at Springside Park in Napanee on Jan. 7
GREEN-WINGED TEAL – 9 birds were seen at Belle Park on Jan. 8, 4 on Jan.
12; 1 was seen at the Amherstview Sewage Lagoons on Jan. 9, 1 on Jan. 11
WHITE-WINGED SCOTER – 1 bird was seen on the Invista Property on Jan. 7; 1
was seen at McKnight Road on Jan. 7; 6 were seen at Centennial Park in Bath
on Jan. 8; 40 were seen at Prince Edward Point NWA on Jan. 8, 40 on Jan.
10; 8 were seen at Long Point/Gravelly Bay Road on Jan. 10
RUDDY DUCK – 1 bird was seen in Cataraqui Bay on Jan. 7, 2 on Jan. 11; 2
were seen in Elevator Bay on Jan. 8, 2 on Jan. 12
HORNED GREBE – 1 was seen at Prince Edward Point NWA on Jan. 6, 3 on Jan.
8; 1 was seen on Howe Island on Jan. 7; 4 were seen on Cressy Lakeside Road
on Jan. 11
AMERICAN COOT – 10 birds were seen in Cataraqui Bay on Jan. 6, 1 on Jan.
12; 11 were seen at Elevator Bay on Jan. 6, 5 on Jan. 8, 14 on Jan. 11, 6
on Jan. 12; 8 birds were seen at RMC on Jan. 7; 2 were seen at the Invista
Pond on Jan. 11; 16 were counted at the Trailhead Pier on Jan. 11
KILLDEER – 4 birds were continuing at Heritage Park in Bath on Jan. 6, 1
on Jan. 8; 3 birds were seen on Country Club Drive on Jan. 8
ICELAND GULL – 1 bird was seen on Wolfe Island on Jan. 7; 1 was seen at the
Montreal Street Apartments on Jan. 8
*LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL *– 1 bird was found at the Violet Dump on Jan. 11
GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL – still multiple sightings in the Kingston circle
this week.
GLAUCOUS GULL – 1 bird was seen at The Marshlands CA on Jan. 6; 1 was
seen at the Violet Dump on Jan. 11, 1 on Jan. 12; 1 was seen at Heritage
Point in Bath on Jan. 11
COMMON LOON – 2 were seen on Howe Island on Jan. 7; 1 was seen at the
Invista Property on Jan. 7; 1 was seen at Heritage Point in Bath on Jan. 8;
2 were seen on Cressy Bayside Road on Jan. 11
DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT – 2 birds were seen at Kingston Mills on Jan. 7
GREAT BLUE HERON – 1 late bird was seen on Days Road on Jan. 6; 1 bird
was seen on Wolfe Island on Jan. 12
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK – 1 was seen at Lemoine Point on Jan. 7; 1 was seen on
Brock Street on Jan. 8;
COOPER'S HAWK – 1 bird was seen on Wolfe Island on Jan. 7; 1 was seen at
Hay Bay on Jan. 7; 1 was seen at 194 Pauline Tom Ave. on Jan. 8; 1 was seen
near Middle Road on Jan. 9; 1 was seen on Botting Road on Jan. 10; 1 bird
was seen at a Private Residence on Montreal Street on Jan. 11; 1 was seen
at Lemoine Point on Jan. 11
BELTED KINGFISHER – 1 was seen at Kingston Mills on Jan. 6, 1 on Jan. 7;
1 was seen on Amherst Island on Jan. 8
NORTHERN FLICKER – 1 bird was seen at the Invista Property on Jan. 6 and
again on Jan. 12; 1 was seen at Lemoine Point on Jan. 8; 1 was seen near
Sandhurst on Jan. 8; 1 was seen at the Amherstview Sewage Lagoons on Jan. 9
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER- 1 bird was seen in the Balsam Grove Area on
Jan. 12
AMERICAN KESTREL – multiple sightings in the Kingston Area throughout the
week
MERLIN – 1 was seen on Pacific Road on Jan. 8
PEREGRINE FALCON – 1 bird was seen at Hay Bay on Jan. 7; 1 was seen at
Prince Edward Point NWA on Jan. 10; 1 was seen on Clergy Street on Jan. 12
NORTHERN SHRIKE – 1 bird was seen at the Invista Property on Jan. 6; 1 was
seen at Grass Creek Park on Jan. 6; 1 was seen on Amherst Island on Jan. 6,
1 on Jan. 7; 1 was seen at Prince Edward Point NWA on Jan. 10; 1 was seen

in Kingston on Jan. 12; 1 bird was heard singing on the K&P Trail near
River Street on Jan. 12
GRAY CATBIRD – 1 bird was seen on the K&P Trail near River Street on Jan.

NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD – 1 bird was still present at Portsmouth Olympic
Harbour on Jan. 6 and again on Jan. 12; 1 was found on Howe Island on Jan.

HERMIT THRUSH – 2 were seen at the Marshlands CA on Jan. 7, 2 on Jan. 8
PURPLE FINCH – 1 was seen on Howe Island Drive on Jan. 7; 3 were seen at
Long Point/Gravelly Bay Road on Jan. 10; 1 was seen on Marble Rock Road on
Jan. 10; 2 were seen on the K&P Trail near River Street on Jan. 12
RED CROSSBILL – 6 were seen in Verona on Jan. 9; 3 were seen at Little
Cataraqui CA on Jan. 10; 1 was seen at 1726 Bur Brook Road on Jan. 12
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL – 1 was seen on Amherst Island on Jan. 6
PINE SISKIN – 2 were seen in Newboro on Jan. 6; 10 were seen on Bedford
Road on Jan. 9
LAPLAND LONGSPUR – 2 were seen on Fairfax Road on Jan. 7, 1 on Jan. 8
HORNED LARK- 1 bird was seen on Outlet Road on Jan. 7; 15 were seen on

Jan. 8; 15 birds were seen on Whitechurch Road on Jan. 12
SNOW BUNTING – 12 birds were seen on Wolfe Island on Jan. 7, 340 were
counted on Wolfe Island on Jan. 8, 390 in total were seen on Wolfe Island
on Jan. 12; 22 were seen on Outlet Road on Jan. 7; 63 were seen on Fairfax
Road on Jan. 7, 80 on Jan. 8; 1 was seen on Garrett Road on Jan. 8; 22 were
seen on Sibbit Road on Jan. 9; 11 were counted on Amherst Island on Jan. 9,

SONG SPARROW – 1 was seen at Links Mills School House on Jan. 6, 2 on Jan.

SWAMP SPARROW – 2 late birds were seen at the Marshlands on Jan. 12
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD – 16 birds were seen on Perth Road Crescent on Jan.
6; 28 birds were still present at 5545 Perth Road Crescent on Jan. 7, 21 on
Jan. 9, 22 on Jan. 10; 2 were seen on Marble Rock Road on Jan. 7; 1 was
seen at a private residence east of Kingston on Jan. 7, 1 on Jan. 8, 1 on
Jan. 9, 1 on Jan. 11
COMMON GRACKLE – 1 late bird was seen at Lemoine Point on Jan. 10;
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER – 1 bird was seen at the Invista Property on Jan. 7;

Please note that you must be a card-carrying member of Kingston Field
Naturalists (KFN), or be accompanied by a member, to access both the Martin
Edwards Reserve and Amherstview Sewage Lagoons. Permits are being checked
on a regular basis at Amherstview and those without are being evicted. KFN
members wishing to enter the Invista property must enter through the west
gate and show their membership card to security.
