Ontario 2022-2023 Winter bird list - Final numbers

Hello Everyone,

The 2022-2023 Winter Listing season finished on February 28, 2023.  This
year there was a total of 218 species reported in Ontario. This species
total is a little higher than the 16 year average of 207. The median value
is 202 for those 16 years. The top three highest years were 2021-2022 with
229, 2011-2012 with 223, and 2015-2016 with 220. The lowest season
was 2009-2010 with 189 species.

Since my last update to Ontbirds on January 31, new species added are
Brewer's Blackbird found by Tim Sabo on December 22, 2022 and the Great
Cormorant was seen by Alvan Buckley on December 12, 2022.

A roll call of rare birds seen this year include:

  • White-rumped Sandpiper (seen 2 times in the last 16 years or 2/16)
  • Pectoral Sandpiper (3/16)
  • Western Sandpiper (1/16)
  • Dovekie (1/16)
  • Razorbill (2/16)
  • Glaucous-winged Gull (2/16)
  • Green Heron (0/16)
  • Warbling Vireo (0/16)
  • LeConte's Sparrow (0/16)
  • Yellow-breasted Chat (2/16)
  • Blackburnian Warbler (0/16)
