Visitors:
We thank today's observers for their efforts and those interested in the
ongoing Hawk Count. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access to the top level
of Hawk Tower is limited to hawk counters and qualified observers only. The
2nd and lower levels are open to the public practising COVID-19 safe
precautions (social distancing). Thank you for your understanding and
involvement.
Weather:
The day consisted of clear skies with no cloud cover, with a starting
temperature of -3 and a high of 3. Winds started off favourable at a
north-westerly direction but eventually shifted to south-westerly.
Raptor Observations:
A similar day of raptors to that of yesterday with the majority of activity
being present during the north-westerly wind hours. Species that made an
appearance include 12 Turkey Vultures, 2 Northern Harriers, 3 Sharpies, 2
Cooper's Hawks, 3 Bald Eagles, and 1 Peregrine Falcon. Buteos were also
consistent with 58 Red Tails and 7 Red Shoulders.
Non-raptor Observations:
Diversity was also similar to that of yesterday, although with slightly
less waterfowl abundance and species richness. Songbird activity continues
to be low, with American Goldfinch movement slightly lower at 175 today.
American Crow movement has reemerged with 570 seen moving today. The
highlight of the day was a passing through flock of Sandhill Cranes that
made a lap above the tower.

Predictions:
Tomorrow it is expected to be slightly warmer with a low of 1 and a high of
8 C during observation hours. Skies are expected to be somewhat more cloudy
however, and winds are anticipated to be a strong southerly for the whole
day. Hopefully raptor movement will remain consistent despite these
discouraging winds.
