Visitors:
We thank all today's observers for their efforts and those interested in
the ongoing Hawk Count. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access to the top
level of Hawk Tower is limited to hawk counters and qualified observers
only. The 2nd and lower levels are open to the public practising COVID-19
safe precautions (social distancing). Thank you for your understanding and
involvement.
Weather:
The day started overcast and with rain that stopped mid morning. The cloud
reduced throughout the day, visibility improved and the temperature rose to
24c. A light to moderate wind remained generally from the south east.
Raptor Observations:
Mostly Turkey vultures (180) were seen today in small to medium groups.
Sharp-shinned Hawks only managed 25 and the remainder very low numbers. No
Northern Harriers today. It was good to see 3 Peregrine Falcons, including
one that caught an unfortunate Blue Jay close to the tower.
Non-raptor Observations:
The Blue Jay migration continues with a healthy 21,400 counted today. 300
Tree Swallows were catching insects over the marsh until the sun broke
through. Waterbird and duck numbers on the marsh increased today. Songbird
numbers remain low. Fewer blackbirds were seen today. There was a good
diversity of woodpeckers including a Red-headed. The list is at
https://ebird.org/checklist/S95950021
Predictions:
Tomorrows wind is similar to today, but there is no rain forecast. Cloudy
but not overcast, so we may see more Turkey Vultures with hopefully some
buteos within the kettles. We always welcome more falcons and maybe more
American Kestrels will pass the tower.
