Total observation time: 9.5 hours
Official Counter: Tom Bolohan
Observers: Dave Brown, Harold V., Jason McGuire, Ken Wootton,

Visitors:
With it being a holiday today we had quite a few visitors and
unfortunately, not a lot of birds for them to enjoy. Despite this fact, it
was a great day to be out and enjoying the sunshine. Thanks to Tom B,
Harold, Ken, Su, Tom S, Cary, Pete R and Jason for helping with today's
count.
Weather:
A truly beautiful day with pure blue skies for the entire morning before
our first clouds showed up. Eventually it clouded over almost entirely
before breaking out once again. Temps were cool to start at 9C before
climbing to 20C. Winds were a bit NE to start but then swung to E and to
ESE before swinging back around to ENE at the end of the count period.
Pressure was fairly steady for the day.
Raptor Observations:
It was a smaller than expected flight today with 1161 birds tallied... I'm
sure due in part to the fact the wind never stuck to a more northerly
direction so less birds got pushed down to the lake shore to come past the
hawk watch. Most of the flight was early in the day and consisted of
several good kettles of TVs basically right overhead. A nice Peregrine
soared high up in front of us before screaming off westward once again
while a 2nd Peregrine flew directly across in front of the viewing platform
just above treetop height. Only a single Golden Eagle today and several
Bald Eagles that were counted. Sharpies (81) and Redtails (36) were decent
counts while just a single young Red-shouldered Hawk passed right overhead.
Non-raptor Observations:
A number of good non-raptors were seen today including warblers,,,
Nashville, Northern Parula, Yellow-rumped. Palm and at least a couple of
Blue-headed Vireos. Woodpeckers... YB Sapsucker, Red-bellied, Pileated, N.
Flicker, Downy and Hairy and quite a few Hermit Thrush, RC kinglet and GC
Kinglet. A nice Brown Creeper was crawling up a tree right above the
counters and RB Nuthatches continue to be seen and heard in good numbers in
and around the viewing platform.
Monarch count: 7
Predictions:
The winds for Tuesday are forecast to be from the NW for the day which is
usually our best wind direction for better flights. The thermal updraft
velocities are not particularly high tomorrow so the birds may be crossing
the area at a lower altitude that they were today. Looking further out...
both Wed and Thu are forecast to have northerly winds as well which should
help push more birds down to the lake shores.
