Visitors:
We thank all today's observers for their efforts and those interested in
the ongoing Hawk Count. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access to the top
level of Hawk Tower is limited to hawk counters and qualified observers
only. The 2nd and lower levels are open to the public practising COVID-19
safe precautions (social distancing). Thank you for your understanding and
involvement.
Weather:
Misty and overcast all day. Wind was light to moderate from the north east.
The temperature remained in high teens and the humidity was 100% all day
Raptor Observations:
The low cloud level meant that we probably missed migrating raptors in the
cloud. Turkey Vultures again ruled the day with 389 seen. Sharp-shinned
Hawks followed with 46 and American Kestrels 19. All other species were
below 5 in number, but it was good to see another single Red-shouldered
Hawk.
Non-raptor Observations:
Blue Jays were slightly reduced at 8,700 and Tree Swallows significantly
reduced at 50. Species numbers on the marsh are stable with 8 species of
duck seen. Yellow-rumped are the most numerous warblers, with Pine and
Blackpoll also seen. It was good to see a Marsh Wren in the reeds
surrounding the Tower. The list is at https://ebird.org/checklist/S95694341
Predictions:
Tomorrow may be less overcast but other aspects are less favourable; wind
moderate from the south east and rain likely in the afternoon. Likely
migration to be similar to today with Turkey Vultures and Sharp-shinned
Hawks the most numerous.
