Visitors:
Huge thanks to our counters: Christine, David, Stephen, Hugh, Liz, Jaron,
Michelle and Mike! Nice to meet Dennis, Malcom, Hayden, Jeff, Shane and
everyone who visited the tower on this beautiful fall day!
Weather:
Cool crisp morning with light fog that faded quickly. Winds started with
our preferred direction of north but shifted east then settled into a
southerly breeze. Temperature started around 9C and slowly rose to a high
of 21C.
Raptor Observations:
Was a slower day on the tower as the wind shifted from north to south. As
expected Turkey Vultures (1076) ruled the day. Red-Tailed (86),
Sharp-shinned (44) and Red-Shouldered (30) had a good showing. Now for the
exciting parts, Season's first of an Immature American Goshawk! A late
arriving Golden Eagle (at 15:26) tired to sneak by far to the north.
Non-raptor Observations:
Ducks once again had a good representation in the marsh, primarily composed
of Ring-Necked (890) and Green-Winged Teal (207). Our Season's first Fox
Sparrow showed itself as it chased around the other sparrows. Good
movements of American Crows (1787), Red-Winged Blackbirds (1800) and
European Starlings (4400). Monarchs (9) were spotted today and I wish them
favorable winds and a quick journey south.
Complete list can be found at https://ebird.org/checklist/S405105822.
Predictions:
Weather is looking almost identical tomorrow other then winds starting in
the south. Hopefully the warm temperatures will still bring in good numbers
that are chasing the thermals.
