It was good to meet Bob who succeeded in his wish to see Golden Eagles. Weather: The wind was moderate to strong, gusting very strong from the west. We had blue skies all day with the temperature starting at 8c and eventually reaching nearly 16c. Visibility was good all day. Raptor Observations: Fewer numbers than previous days with Red-tailed Hawks (78) leading the pack, closely followed by Turkey Vultures (63). We saw four Golden Eagles, all to the north with most being adults. Cooper's Hawks (10) and Sharp-shinned Hawks (9) came throughout the day, with lower numbers of Northern Harriers (4) and Red-shouldered Hawks (2). A Merlin and two Peregrines completed the list. Non-raptor Observations: Ducks are on the marsh in very large numbers, with a huge raft of Ring-necked Duck (5,930) across the marsh. Many must have arrived overnight. Good numbers of Tundra Swan (53) flew over the marsh with some settling. Very quiet day for small birds around the Tower, but just to prove yesterdays comment wrong, Cedar Waxwing (369) and American Goldfinch (338) are still maintaining their numbers. It will be another bright sunny day, but temperatures will be down compared to today reaching 9c.
