Highlights: The weather this week was exceptionally warm (record-breaking in places) and winds were favourable for migration with many species continuing to arrive on the earlier side of 'expected'. Last week's Say's Phoebe continued to 6th. Here are the highlights of the past week: SNOW GOOSE - a single bird was seen on Wolfe Island on 7th. CACKLING GOOSE - a single bird was seen at Prince Edward Point on 8th. NORTHERN SHOVELER - now widespread. SURF SCOTER - 2 birds were seen near Prince Edward Point on 9th. BLACK SCOTER - there have been several sightings this week at/near Prince Edward Point, with 16 seen there on 8th. HORNED GREBE - numbers are beginning to build in Prince Edward with 13 seen near the Point on 7th. RED-NECKED GREBE - 2 birds were seen near Joyceville on 4th with 7 near Waupoos on 9th. VIRGINIA RAIL - the first bird was encountered at Marshlands CA, Kingston, on 6th with a further individual at Gananoque NWA on 9th. SANDHILL CRANE - birds were noted at Kaiser Cross Road, Verona, Napanee Limestone Plain IBA, Bedford Mills, and Eden Grove this week. CASPIAN TERN - a single bird was seen at Kaiser Cross Road, Prince Edward, on 9th. AMERICAN BITTERN - the first of the season was noted at Gananoque on 9th. GREAT EGRET - 1 was at Prince Edward Point on 6th with 2-3 at Kaiser Cross Road, Prince Edward, on 8th/9th. ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK - Amherst Island is still holding good numbers of this species with 20 seen there on 5th. PEREGRINE FALCON - singles were seen on Amherst Island on 2nd and 5th. SAY'S PHOEBE - this bird continued to be seen near the helipad on Stella 40ft, Amherst Island, through to 6th. LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE - 2-3 birds were regularly seen at Napanee Limestone Plain IBA this week with another on Amherst Island on 6th. NORTHERN SHRIKE - at this time of year both shrike species can be seen so care is required to separate the two - a Northern Shrike was photographed at the known breeding location of the Loggerhead Shrike (Napanee Limestone Plain IBA) on 6th. Other birds were seen on Amherst Island on 2nd and 3rd. FISH CROW - a late report has just surfaced of 2 birds recorded calling at City Park, Kingston, on 17th March. TUFTED TITMOUSE - seemingly starting to take a hold in the area, birds were seen in Kingston (Fairway Park/Marshlands CA) on 8th, at Bath on 4th and near Murvale, also on 4th. NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW - the first of the year was seen on Amherst Island on 8th. CLIFF SWALLOW - outside of the area (and missed from last week's report) a very early bird was seen near Mallorytown on 1st. RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET - birds were far more noticeable in the area from 8th onwards. HOUSE WREN - an early bird was seen at Prince Edward Point on 5th. CAROLINA WREN - birds were noted at Gananoque, Prince Edward Point and Kingston this week. BROWN THRASHER - the first of the season was seen in Kingston on 9th. NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD - a single bird was seen on Amherst Island on 6th. HOARY REDPOLL - 1-2 birds continued in the Alwington area of Kingston to 7th with another at Marble Rock Road on 5th. RED CROSSBILL - 12 birds were seen at Marshland CA, Kingston, on 6th, with 18 in downtown Kingston on 7th. A single was also seen near Battersea on 7th. PINE SISKIN - 2-4 birds were at Bur Brook Road, Kingston, on 3rd/4th, with 1 near Verona on 6th and another on Marble Rock Rd on 7th. SNOW BUNTING - 3 birds were seen at Depot Lake CA on 3rd with a single at Prince Edward Point on 5th - 7th. VESPER SPARROW - 1 bird was seen on Amherst island on 5th and 6th with 3 sightings in Prince Edward county on 9th. SAVANNAH SPARROW - the first was noted on Wolfe Island on 7th with widespread sightings the following 2 days. EASTERN TOWHEE - this species made big inroads into the area this week with numerous sightings. RUSTY BLACKBIRD - there were numerous widespread sightings this week but the high count came from Big Sandy Bay, Wolfe Island, where 35 were seen on 3rd. PINE WARBLER - a single bird was seen at Glenn Lawrence on 7th with 2 at Gananoque on 9th.
